Huge Success of Basingstoke Writers' Circle Exhibition
Standing room only for some of the seventy guests who attended the grand opening of Basingstoke Writers' Circle (BWC) Exhibition on Friday evening, 27th November at the Willis Museum!
The Circle wishes to express our thanks to the friendly staff that kindly catered for more people than expected and apologies, to guests left standing. The Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane, Cllr Brian Gurden, was BWC special guest; apparently he writes a detailed account of the events he attends during his office. He encouraged the gathering to put thoughts down on paper themselves.
Smiles and applause echoed the walls, as some members read their compositions to the enthusiastic audience to include a poem especially composed for Dave Holby, or "Dave the Rower", as he is affectionaly known to his admiring fans here in Basingstoke Malls. Dave then addressed the audience and explained his goal to row the equivalent of the equator on a land rowing machine, taking him almost three years to complete in aid of Breakthrough Breast Cancer.
The book, "Writing for the Willis - from Fact to Fiction", written in conjunction with the Willis Museum, is on view. BWC members, inspired by the museum's display on Hampshire through the ages chose artefacts to weave into their story. Summaries written by the authors are to be found near to the artefacts on display.
The artistic exhibition of published and award winning work is set in a glass cabinet. Around the wall can be seen a high standard of prose and poetry - all on view until 24th December.
